How Long Will I Have Braces?

Dr. Joseph Arvay, Dr. Michael Goldkind and the team at Arvay Orthodontics in Morristown NJ guide their patients through the course of treatment with sensitivity and compassion in each instance. Orthodontic treatment is a commitment that can last for several years. Arvay Orthodontics patients are confident throughout the course of treatment that they are being cared for by knowledgeable and experienced orthodontic professionals.

Depending on the individual’s needs, treatment goals, and the type of orthodontic treatment selected, the time that you have your braces on will vary. A typical length of  treatment is about two years, give or take. Some patients have their braces on for only six months, while other patients have them for longer than three years.

    The Consultation

An initial consultation with Dr. Arvay or Dr. Goldkind is necessary to determine each patient’s needs and treatment goals. Budget about an hour for this assessment and to ask important questions about the proposed treatment. X-rays, cast impressions of the teeth, and photographs of the mouth may be taken for analysis. A course of treatment and treatment costs can then be submitted to the patient and discussed with the team.

    The Installation

An appointment to install a set of braces varies with each patient’s needs and choice of treatment. The installation of a set of braces typically lasts about 2 hours; the bracket type and position and the wire selection may affect the total installation time. The Arvay Orthodontics team will answer any questions as they outline the entire course of treatment from beginning to end.

    The Commitment

Routine checkups and appointments for appliance adjustments are typical throughout the course of treatment. The condition of the teeth, gums, and appliances are evaluated and adjusted if necessary. These sessions last about 15-to-20 minutes and take place every 8-to-10 weeks. Patients with Invisalign clear aligners need more frequent appointments; about every 4-to-6 weeks.

    The Big Reveal

Debanding is the process of removing braces from the teeth. This event is the big breath taken after a full course of orthodontic treatment. This process lasts about an hour and a half. The teeth are now in their optimal functional position; they look straight and natural. A dentist appointment is necessary succeeding the removal of your braces for a thorough cleaning, check-up, and fluoride treatment.

    The Future

Before-and-after photos of the treatment allows the patient and treatment provider to see the results of the treatment. A final set of treatment records will be filed, and the patient typically will be fitted for a retainer. A retainer is necessary after the removal of the braces to keep the teeth from wandering back into their old positions. Conscientious use of a retainer after treatment with braces is insurance that the treatment results will last a lifetime.
