    Foods to Avoid if You Wear Braces in Morristown and Flanders NJ

    Anyone who has worn braces understands that the food you eat can have a huge impact on your orthodontic care. This is true whether you wear clear braces or traditional metal brackets. At Arvay Orthodontics, we sometimes see patients who have damaged their braces after an unfortunate food choice. To keep that from happening to you, we recommend that all patients with braces avoid certain foods.

    Make Conscious Food Choices

    A good rule to follow is to use your common sense. Is the food sticky, hard, or high in sugar? These three types of food are often the ones that do the most damage to braces and teeth and should always be avoided throughout the duration of your treatment. Some examples of foods to avoid include the following:

    • Nuts
    • Ice
    • Uncut apples or carrots
    • Jolly rancher candies
    • Gum
    • Toffee
    • Tootsie Rolls
    • Caramels

    Sugary Foods

    It is best to minimize how many sweets you eat while under orthodontic care. Ice cream, candy, cake, and pie are all treats and should be eaten sparingly. Soda, sweet teas, and other sugary drinks should be eaten no more than once a day. These foods often cause excessive plaque, which is more likely to damage patients’ teeth if they use orthodontic appliances like Invisalign or traditional braces.
